While not luxurious, the Tropicana's larger beachside bungalows are pleasant, with thatched ceilings that stretch to the sky, comfortable rattan furnishings and private patios overlooking the coconut-lined beach. (Beware: the resort has a wide range of accommodations and some of the other rooms are not nearly so well appointed!)

The Tropican has always had a quirky, backpacker vibe and the wide range of accomodation attracts a curious mix of travelers. Despite that the semi-enclosed restaurant/bar is one of the best on the island and the pool and two hectares of grounds and gardens are pleasant.

Long the preferred choice for a stay on Phu Quoc, the Tropicana will face competition beginning in 2006, something it really never had. Not to be outdone, the owner plans an entirely new upscale resort a few kilometers away. We don't think that bodes well for the "old" Tropicana, which seems destined to remain just that.
